Chess Puzzles Puzzle

Puzzles are a very good way of analysing chess positions. You know there is one very good move to be made - if only you could just see it! The amount of time you take finding the answer to a chess puzzle is the same time you should take for each move in a competitive game of chess. You should always be looking for the clever move!

Ian's Favourite Brainteaser

This is Ian's favourite chess puzzle:

White to mate in one move!

Time yourself to see how long you take to solve it!

Solution Bright Ideas

Most chess puzzle websites provide a button you can press to see the solution.

That is far too easy - you should think about the puzzle until you get the solution.

If you don't see the solution within a few minutes, try it out on someone else who knows about chess.

If you really can't get the answer send us an e-mail and we will send you back the answer! Write to:

You could try looking down the pub!

Puzzle comment There is no way for white to mate with one move. If you know something that I don't, let me know.....

Puzzle comment We give up! Neither of us could figure out that one.
...Why didn't I think of that?????
JC, 02/02/02

Puzzle comment OK... So I looked and looked for the answer. I really don't see any way White can mate in one move, unless this is a joke.... please let me know!
...Now it seems so easy! I can't believe I didn't see it! I showed the puzzle to two friends of mine. The weakest player got it IMMEDIATELY. And the strongest player is still searching for the answer to no avail.

Puzzle comment Got me! Bring forth the humiliation.
RP, 09/02/03

Puzzle comment I really hope that this is a joke, because I honestly don't see any possible mate in one... So if there is an answer (which I am positive there isn't), please let me know and I'll commend you for the hardest chess puzzle I have ever seen. Interestingly enough, I don't even see a mate in two moves... curious.
